A couple of things in your post make me say "Huh?"
The retired doctor said he had them in his 30's? That's all? Never had them any more? Doesn't sound like clusters to me.
Your sentence saying the headache lasts all day also doesn't sound like a cluster headache to me. This is only my opinion and I'm not a doctor.
