Triptans can kill you

Triptans drugs can kill migraine patients if he will be in a stress situations in time of taken a triptans drugs.......
If he is lucky it can cause a cerebral lessions...
Triptans also cause a high Blood pressure during the time of acting, so it may cause a cerebral bleeding.
You can search the migraine medical archive and you will never find a cerebral lession ar stoke and death of migraine patients before the ERA of TRIPTANS..
You may want more explanation to understand,,
To make the danger of triptans as low as possible, you must know from where the danger comes,,
Triptans works as a strong vasoconstrictore (work on heart vessels and brain also), stress also cause a heart vasoconstrictore, in addition to that you all know that person in stress take alot of coffe ( strong heart vasoconstrictore factore) and Nicotine (smoke) which also heart vasoconstrictore factore.......
Migraine patients which take triptans in such situations can be in a very high risk of heart attack.

How could you say that triptans cant increase risk of heart attack when it cause a strong heart vasoconstrictore, and they wrote inside the triptans box that when patients feel pain in his chest he must stop the treatment but it will be too late,,,,,,

Migraine patients must know how work triptans to make him feel better,,,,
He must know that vasodilatation is resbosable for migraine headache and because of that they give him a triptans that make this vasodilatation stop but by triptans effect as strog vasoconstrictores,,,here is the big danger that every doctors must explain that to his patients,,,,Triptans effect as vasoconstrictore is not selected (not works on the arteries that cause migraine headache but also works on brain and heart arteries) ,,,,
And he must know that any drugs work on heart arteries as vasoconstrictore is very dangerous because it effects goes for a long time which make the posiblility of heart attack is real.....
No one if he think correct can or have wright to talk that triptans cant cause heart attack or worst......
Migraine patients can try any migraine drugs but not TRIPTANS.
When it works as vasoconstricitres on heart vesseles that mean its a poisson,,,,
As known migraine is very common disease, so sportsmens also may have migraine, some patients take triptans to prevent migraine crises,,,so can you think what may be happen, when a sportsmen has a match to play, he has already or he afraid to have migraine crises, so he will take one of triptans drugs,,as he sportsmen he may take 2 tablets to be sure that migraine headaches will sure not disturb his play.....
That mean less blood to supply heart muscle,,,plus emotion that also cause spsm in heart vessels,,,,
Less blood in heart arteries that give heart muscle to contract,,,In addition to that heart will work in maximum effort in sport time,,,.
So we have sure less blood due to vasoconstrictores, and too much need to more blood,,,,,.
You can ask any cardiolog and he will tell you if heart attack in this situation possible or not????????.

All evidence is that the cerebral lesions are present in migraneurs who have never taken triptans - they are part of the disease process.

Triptans can cause circulatory problems (they are potent vasoconstrictors) - and with basilar migraine, could be fatal.  They are not risk free, but for many patients, the risk is low and they and their doctors may make an informed decision that the relief is worth the risk.

As an episodic, I don't take triptans. Tried it once, felt quite bad.  But my decision not to take triptans is not a mandate to others not to take them.

Hello Galaxy, I see you have posted this on both this board and the clustee specific board. May I respectfully ask if you have clusters and if so what you use instead of triptans?
You seem to have a great down on them but I would like to point out they have stopped many many people here from ending it all. Sometimes the only choice we have is the lesser of two evils and since for many clusterheads extreme exercise is a trigger I don't think the sporting angle will bother many!

Unfortuanately the majority of meds. we take can kill us.  Even more unfortunate is the fact that there are few options.  So its pick yer' poison at the CH club.

Given the choice of someone possibly commtting suicide or taking Triptans, it's obvious the reward outweighs any risk.

Why do doctors always turn to Imitrex first and not O2? Why is it far harder for people to get scripts for Oxygen?

I have read stories of people being given Imitrex scripts or samples but when they ask for an O2 script the response is to go to the ER and try it there first or "let's try this first".

Does anyone know the answer? I've asked the question before and will probably raise it again hoping someone knows the answer. I've asked my neuro and just gotten a shrug of the shoulders.

Don't know the situation there but here the Imigran/trex is licensed as a treatment and the 02 not. We await avidly the results of the formal trials running here to support the historical use of 02 with clinical data so it too is licensed.

Doctors here just don't understand o2 therapy, where, since they do understand what triptans do and have data to back it up, so they play safe

Gotcha Pubgirl,

I have heard that from someone in the UK too and pointed them to a page in Wales.
http://www.attract.wales.nhs.uk/question_answers.cfm?question_id=910

It's owned by the Welsh National Public Health Service. According to it's "about" page it is supposed to be used as a place where doctors can keep up to date on the latest research.

I also point people to this which is dated 2/05:
http://www.aafp.org/afp/20050215/717.html
It's the "treatment of choice" according to the American Academy of Family Physicians article with a 56 percent success rate with no side effects.

What rights do we have as patients to choose our plan of treatment? Is it all up to the doctor and if we don't like it then find another one?

I hate to think doctors are not staying up to date or using resources made available to them. Maybe the treatment plan they go by is the Physician's Desk Reference book, (I have no idea what it says in there about CH. Anyone have a copy by chance?)

Isn't that a bit euphemistic? After all, Horton described the use of oxygen for CH back in 1942. (For those with no calculator at hand, that was 63 (sixty-three) years ago!)

Does anyone know the numbers of migrainers/clusterheads that have killed themselves?
I would be willing to bet a shot of makers mark that more sufferers have taken their own life than have been killed by a triptan drug.

Good call on the new relief that is only available from one source.  How much longer do you think we are gonna have to wait?

Topical,
Just a word about one of the links you posted,

http://www.attract.wales.nhs.uk/question_answers.cfm?question_id=910

They are refering to hyperbaric O2, i.e O2 therapy while under pressure in a divers "decopresion chamber".

I only post to suggest caution regarding any hyperbaric studies. The people who run these operations are interested in comercialisation of hyperbaric O2, as decompression chambers are immenesly valuable to divers, expensive to run, but poorly funded. So there is the same old "pressure" for it to be a found to be an effective treatment for all sorts of things. This way, the chambers can be funded as a treatment centre, and will be available for reckless/unlucky divers with decompresion sickness.

This does not take anything away from the study itself, but does point toward an agenda of "selling" the hyperbaric part of the treatment.

Ueli - You're making me go back to my conspiracy theory involving drug companies.  Sad

dirky- Read paragraphs 2 and 5. These appear to be inhalation studies only.

Gallagher RM et al. Analgesic use in cluster headache. Headache. 1996; 36(2): 105-7.

Fogan L. Treatment of cluster headaches. A double-blind comparison of oxygen v air inhalation. Archives of Neurology. 1985; 42(4): 362-3.

I am impressed by Hyperbaric treatments but more study is needed. I posted on Hyperbarbic treatment a little bit ago, please have a look:
